Seoul Digital Forum – 2011 Connected

Connected: Into a Shared Future
Being connected is an aspiration running throughout the history of every remarkable civilization. By leveraging collective intelligence and pooling scattered resources, communities have strived to improve living conditions, elevate their goals, and promote their culture. This art of connecting has both determined the legacy of civilizations, as well as shaped their future. The creation and dissemination of the cuneiform script of the Mesopotamian civilization allowed people to learn how to connect and collaborate, which helped give rise to the agricultural revolution. In the same vein, the printing press paved the way for the industrial revolution and modern civilization. Knowledge and wisdom came to be shared effectively on a mass scale, which eventually led to the bloom of the information technology revolution and the birth of the digital age. Now we are entering the next stage of digital civilization, epitomized by ubiquitous mobile technology and social network services. The art and skill of connecting is in full stride and is allowing the formerly unheard voices to be heard through an unprecedented mechanism for sharing thoughts and ideas. With everything – devices, people, culture – connected and at our fingertips, a potentially seamless ecosystem is finally in sight and is accelerating the pace of change in both the biosphere and blogosphere. The Connector, whoever that proves to be, shall yet again open a new world.

Nevertheless, this new world of connectedness still poses some old and new questions: How can we make the best use of these technologies to confront perennial global challenges like war, poverty, disease, nuclear proliferation, and climate change? What must be done to meet new challenges such as terrorism, cyber warfare, privacy, and the digital divide? In this age of empathy, how can corporations better serve both shareholders and citizens? Who is the real king in media in this storm of hyperconnectivity? Can 600 million Facebook subscribers leverage their people power to make the world a more collaborative and creative place? As the focus turns to Asia, how should Asian leadership and values be best utilized to help create a more sustainable and harmonious global community? At SDF2011, we will discuss the meaning of connectedness and how we can create a future that is linked together in a way that enables us to realize what it means to be global, emphatic and harmonious.

How to start SEO for a website as a beginner

How to start SEO for a website as a beginner

I am not a SEO expert, but based on what I have learned while opimizing some websites,

I would like to give some tips for SEO beginners.  First of all, check if your website includes meta keywords (or phrases) and descriptions. These are important factors that affect search ranks of your website and webpages. You may utilize different keywords/phrases to promote not only the main page, but also each of the web pages. Those keywords/phrases should represent or identify your website(pages) contents (e.g. keywords/phrases from news articles or research papers posted on webpages). Otherwise, unrelated keywords may dicrease the Quality score and search ranks of your website.

You can also utilize the title tags, which you can find from the window tap once you open your website, in order to make your website more searchable. You can see a complete form of a title tag once you place your mouse pointer on the tap. The title tag is one of the most important factors in SEO. For example, the Princeton Review is using “Test Prep:GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, SAT, ACT, and More” as its main page title tag, and this short phrase consists of several popular keywords of the industry.

Lastly, the more web pages you have in search engines like Google, the more frequently your web contents will show up. This means, by creating sub-pages that provide different kind of information for your target audience, you can increase the possibility that your potential customers will find your website or even one of those webpages (sub-pages). In addition, by promoting those webpages through social media such as Twitter or Digg, you can make those pages more searchable.

I hope my experience would help you develop effective SEO strategies for your websites

Discover the Amazing Power of Pine Needle Oil

Discover the Amazing Power of Pine Needle Oil

Pine leaves can prevent Brain Blood Vessel Disease
According to pathological studies, brain blood vessel disease is a common cause of death and handicap. Along with heart diseases and acute tumors, it is the third constituent for the three main causes of death for all mankind.  In many parts of China , the possibility of blood vessel disease manifestation among patients is extraordinary high.

Among hospitalized patients in the nervous system disorder department, about one-fourth to half of them are victims of brain blood vessel disease.  The statistic is even higher if we take cases from the emergency room into consideration. Thus, brain blood vessel disease, especially prevention, has become a main focus of medical research. Brain blood vessel disease is the generic term for describing all kinds of brain disease caused by any type of vascular disorder.  There are many causes for vascular disorders, but we can classify them into two main categories:

Damage in the cardio-vascular system and other related systems and organs, which can lead to the improper functioning of the brain blood vessels and the overall circulatory system. For example, hardening of the arteries, hyper blood pressure, cardio clogging and infection, blood diseases, metabolism slow down, and even formation of tumors. These malfunctions could eventually lead to the narrowing, clogging, and rupture of brain blood vessels.

Genetic deformed development, injury or tumor formation of brain blood vessels.  Examples are genetic brain arterial tumor, deformed veins and arteries of the brain.  These are generally caused by the presence of other brain tumors or head traumas.  The first cause is the more common one.  So we can conclude that brain vessel disease is a regional manifestation of an overall unhealthiness of the entire body.  That is why we should approach the research and prevention of such disease by examining the entire body.

It is fairly common to distinguish brain vascular disorders into acute and passive. Acute brain vascular disease is the sudden manifestation of the circulatory system of the brain. Patients with such disease will display a lack in partial nervous system functions, often accompanied by a blockage in sensory skills.  This is called a brain vascular accident or stroke. The main process of the disease is death in the brain stem, brain hemorrhage, and web membrane bleeding.
These symptoms can appear alone or together and also they can be reoccurring.

On the other hand, passive brain vessel disease is caused by the insufficiency of blood supply to the brain, which causes the decay of brain metabolism and functions.  The symptoms are hidden and progressive. Hardening of brain arteries and vascular Alzheimer Disease are some of the examples.

Brain blood circulatory blockage is the root cause of all the symptoms of brain vascular disease.  The brain is the most delicate organ in the human body. Brain tissues do not have enough energy storage and constantly need oxygen and glucose supplies from the circulation of blood.  The blood provides the brain with powerful self-maintenance ability, but once its passage to the brain is blocked, the consequence is severe. Brain tissues need about 15% of the blood circulated by the heart. If there is insufficient supply of blood to the brain (in cases such as brain vessel clogging), the blockage of blood vessels could cause the lack of oxygen and glucose for the brain tissues. Without sufficient nutrients, the brain tissues are damaged and may result in serious effects such as physical handicap, loss of speech, or even death.

In terms of cure, western medicine insists in using catalysts to expand brain blood vessels and improve brain circulation.  Doctors use medicines to lower metabolism and relieve brain water accumulation.
By oxygen suction under normal pressure, it improves oxygen concentration and oxygen saturation in blood. On the other hand, for oxygen suction under high pressure, it improves oxygen insufficiency, water accumulation, and brain pressure build-up. At the same time they also stimulate the stability and recovery of body functions.

Western medicine advocates the appliance of artificial or natural physical factors, such as electricity, magnetism, light, sound, heat and force on problem areas to treat the side effects of brain vascular diseases.

In the early stages, these will improve the blood circulation and nutrition of the diseased tissues, stimulate the absorption of fluid and blood secretions, prevent or alleviate the formation of scars, cause the regeneration of nervous tissues and the recovery of its functions, and lessen the effects of the side effects in general. In the later stages, the main focus is in tensing, alleviating, or eliminating scarring, strengthening the ability for muscle contractions, preventing the withering of muscular tissues, and helping the recovery of the nervous system.

In spite of the efforts of western medicine, they are not complete. Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture can supplement western medicine in miraculous ways. Chinese medicine has various unique and effective methods for application.

Even though there are more and more methods, we still need to further research for new methods to prevent and treat passive brain blood vessel diseases.  It continues to be important to search and discover a more effective and less expensive natural medicine for these diseases, especially for prevention.

Specialists have turned their attention to traditional Chinese natural herbal medicine.  Pine Leaves is a new ancient herbal medicine rediscovered and recommended by recent specialists to prevent brain blood vessel diseases. Pine trees are elegant, straight and evergreen in all seasons. They also possess a stubborn vitality. In China , according to ancient legends, gods choose pine leaves and cones as their main course of the meal. So, pine has always been believed to be “the food of the gods” and “the secret to longevity” just because of its mystical medicinal powers.

The most ancient pharmaceutical records of China written in the post-Han Dynasty, “Sheng Nong Herbal Records”, mentioned pine leaves quality to cure bumps and stabilize all five organs.  If taken consistently, it can make a person feel light bodied, young, and lead a long healthy life. Written in the Ming Dynasty’s “Herbal Menu”, pine leaves can provide moisture in the heart and lungs, benefit the inner kidney, prevent colds, stop bleeding, maintain youth, grow hair, stabilize five organs, stop hunger, and extend life.

If used for a long time, one can lose weight and slow aging. This item had tributary paid to the imperial courts of the Ming and Qing Dynasty and earned the name of “longevity”. The modern Chinese herbal medicine books also confirm that pine leaves are temperate, bitter and have positive results in improving the body’s immune system against cold, facilitating blood flow, helping eyesight, calming the nerves and stopping itching.

According to Chinese medicine theory, pine leaves can improve blood flow and unclog veins.  It can also purify the blood and help repair damaged blood vessels.  Pine leaves contain chlorophyll, catechins, multi-vitamins (A, C, K), protein, minerals (iron and phosphorous), fibers, pine oil, etc.  The main purposes of these ingredients are in strengthening blood vessels, stimulating blood flow, cleaning blood vessel blockages, and removing cholesterol that could cause the hardening of arteries. The included Vitamin B6 and large quantities of LUTIN can increase vascular elasticity and strengthen the functions of the capillaries.
Altogether they can prevent brain vascular diseases such as stroke and related side effects. By maintaining the flow of blood, pine leaves can help cure diseases such as high blood pressure and arterial hardening. Results from experiments show that after using pine leaves, the contraction pressure and expansion pressure of blood vessels have decreased significantly. These results further prove that pine leaves can decrease and control high blood pressure.

Besides brain vascular disease, pine leaves can improve the blood circulation of the scalp as well.  As a result, they can help turn silver hair back to black again.
The main reason for the losing hair is bad blood circulation of the scalp.  Pine leaves can effectively strengthen the peripheral blood circulation around the hair roots and help the blood vessels transfer abundant nutrition to the scalp tissues and hair.  This can not only prevent loss of hair but also stimulate growth of hair.

In reality, we see living proof in patients who have been using pine leaves to improve high blood pressure, diabetes and strokes, but have gained improvement in their hair as well.  Besides unclogging blood, preventing aging and Alzheimer Disease, pine leaves also contains lipids, which can help excrete wastes from the body, stimulate metabolism, helping the body to become younger and healthier than before.

Everyone knows that smoking can cause blood vessel clogging. From a scientific experiment, using pine leaf products can stimulate blood circulation. For visual demonstration, an infrared machine was used to detect the difference in body temperature.  The experimental subject is a 25-year-old male. He was asked to smoke 2 cigarettes in 30 minutes.  The machine displays a black shadow around the fingertip area representing the clogging of blood vessels.  But after using pine leaf products, we see a major difference from the machine. We see that blood vessel has been unclogged and blood is allowed to flow through the previously clogged area, augmenting the body temperature.

In addition, chlorophyll can generate blood and stimulate appetite. The chlorophyll in the pine leaves will stimulate the regeneration of new cells and facilitate the production of blood.  When the chlorophyll in the human body is insufficient, the production of red blood cells will not be enough, causing routine aggressive anemia. Because chlorophyll can suppress the reproduction of parasites in our intestines, it will help to improve our appetites.  The ingredients in pine leaves can lower blood glucose. Thus, it is also a very effective treatment for diabetes.

The Y.K. Nutrition Products, Inc. has chosen the best pine leave materials to produce a health-nutrition product called “Green Pine”.  The pine leaves used in “Green Pine” are hand picked and nutritious.  They contain stable ingredients free from agricultural toxins and steroids.

Green Pine has no side effects and has a reliable quality guarantee.  Green Pine is the essence of pine trees.  It includes the entire secret to the evergreen longevity of the pine tree.  Through the modern extraction technology (SCFE) we are able to contain the essence of the pine tree in our gel pills.  In each of our pills we have incorporated 100% natural pine extract of high purity, and geared for easy absorption by the body. Green Pine is the world’s most complete nutrition product.

A series of long term experimental real-life cases have shown that Green Pine indeed has the ability to prevent aging, infection, fatigue, anemia, liver diseases.  It can also help to improve skin tone, lose weight, stimulate appetite, lower blood cholesterol, control blood pressure, augment immunity, and increase memory. Green Pine has significant positive improvement on the after effects of stroke, Alzheimer disease, and speech imparity.

It is also highly effective against brain hemorrhaging, brain and cardio clogging and arterial hardening. Green Pine can prevent high cholesterol, liver diseases, diabetes, and menopause.  It can regulate the full-body functions, increase the immune system, recover memory loss, relieve fatigue, increase muscle strength, stimulate hair growth, and eliminate wrinkles.

Pine Needle Oil as Treasure of Human health

Pine Needle Oil as Treasure of Human health

In the 21st century, diseases like cancerous tumors, high blood pressure, stroke, heart diseases, and diabetes threaten the health and longevity of the human race.  Although other diseases such as Alzheimer, arthritis, anxiety, and fatigue do not pose a threat to people’s lives, they still seriously affect enjoyment of life and healthy lifestyles.  Because of this, scientists and researchers are eager to find ways to fight these diseases and to expand life expectancy. People often seek medicines or nutrition products in order to prevent or relieve the effects of those diseases.

Pine Needles are now called the “treasure of human health”.  Pine deserves this label for its ability to lower high blood pressure and blood cholesterol. It helps to strengthen the heart and arteries.  It is also an excellent antioxidant, and anti-fatigue medicine. As early as the Han Dynasty, the “Book of Imperial Medicine” stated that pine and every part of pine tree has its specific functions in curing and prevention of diseases and infections.

For example, “The Herbal Menu” states that pine leaves are temperate, bitter and non-toxic.  They can stimulate hair growth, stabilize the organs, and prolong life. “The Side Notes of Famous Doctors” also mentions pine leaves’ powers to prevent cold, unclog veins, and stop bleeding.

Pine leaf, also known as pine hair or pine needle, is categorized under Pinus Tabulaeformis Carr and P. Massoniana Lamb. It helps to increase blood circulation, prevent blood clotting and colds. It serves as an effective disinfectant and painkiller.  It helps to regenerate muscle and stop itching as well. According to historical records and modern medicine books, pine leaf can be used to prevent and cure some of the common illnesses, disabilities and diseases listed below:

  1. Stroke and its after-effects, partial handicap, pink eye and twisted mouth, body and limb numbness
  2. Arthritis, sprains, leg and knee weakness, calcium deficiency
  3. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, infection from blood clotting, coronary thrombosis
  4. Stomach pains, sleep ejaculation, and urethral malfunction
  5. Benign bronchitis, lung and heart diseases, and alveoli inflammation
  6. Common cold, headache
  7. Water accumulation, Diabetes and its complementary diseases
  8. Bruises and physical injuries
  9. Acne, sores, and scrotum infections

Other parts of pine, for instance the pine stem, according to the Chinese medicine book “Herbal Menu” can help cure arthritis, maintain the proper functioning of the nervous system, benefit the tendons and bone structure, and keep arthritis under control.

Pine oil: It is especially effective in curing skin diseases and physical injuries including bleeding. The acidity of the pine oil can prevent blood clotting and accumulation of platelets by lowering their surface contact with each other.  This would result in a decrease of blood density and cure diseases from blood clotting such as vascular infections from blood clotting.

Pine roots: Useful for eliminating bruises and curing coughing of blood.
Pine fruit: Increases adrenalcorticotrophic (ACT) functions and curing benign bronchitis, asthma, constipation and burn injuries.  Pine skin: Good for stopping bleeding, diarrhea, and itching. Pine pollen: Helps to cure nausea, stomach and intestinal ulcers, coughing blood, diarrhea, skin diseases, physical injuries and bleeding.

According to the information above, the pine tree is really a “treasure”, especially the pine leaf. Modern research findings indicate that pine needles contain chlorophyll, vitamins A, C, K, protein, iron, phosphorus, minerals, enzymes, glucose and 17 different types of amino acids.
It helps to excrete body wastes and increase metabolism rate.  The included unsaturated carbonated hydrogen lipid acid can be used to eliminate the cholesterol that is responsible for the hardening of brain arteries.

As a result, the blood stream is purified and blood circulation improved.  The large quantity of oxidized matter is used to control body fat and protein over-oxidation reaction, and thus increasing SOD activation and strengthen the process of blood purification. Blood purification allows the body to perform proper anti-aging and anti-fatigue functions.  It also leads to a healthier brain and stronger immune system. It helps to regulate blood pressure and lower blood cholesterol.  It can decrease the harmful Very Low Density Lipid (VLDL) and increase the High Density Lipid (HDL), which is beneficial to human health. Furthermore, it has the ability to disinfect and stop pain.  If experiencing arthritis, it relieves the symptoms and increases the speed for the disappearance of inflammations.  It can stimulate hormones and adrenalin.  It can also prevent the formation of blood clotting, expand coronary arteries and increase blood flow to the brain and limbs and effectively prevent coronary diseases, stroke, and blood brain vascular complexities.  Thus, it has a major role in the prevention of diabetes companion diseases.

Since ancient times, pine has not only been a symbol for long life and healthiness, but also praised as the “food of the gods”.   Pine leaves, according to research using modern technology and medicine, have been contributing to the welfare and health of all mankind in disease prevention and body strengthening.

Webmasters Guide To SEO

Webmasters Guide To Search Engine Optimization

“The webmasters guide to search engine optimization is a mini checklist that will help you to increase website traffic.”

The process of search engine optimization involves tweaking various aspects of your website and deals only with the organic search results. It has nothing to do with paid search also known as inorganic search or PPC. In order to improve your positioning in the organic search results, these guidelines will point out the tactics on how you can improve the visibility of your website.

Page Title:
Page title also referred to as the ‘title tag’ needs to be unique for each page of your website. This tag tells search engines and also the visitors what that particular webpage is all about. The title tag of each page should contain the business/website name followed with important information that relates to the webpage. One must avoid the following:

  1. Recording a title tag that is not relevant to the information present on the webpage.
  2. Recording the same title tag across all the pages of the website.
  3. Recording long title tags.

Meta Description:
The Meta description tag gives both the search engines and also the visitors who perform a search on the search engine an idea on what the web page is all about. That’s why it’s important to precisely summarize the content of your webpage. It’s always safe to keep the meta description tag within 160 characters (including spaces), as the rest of it gets truncated. One must avoid the following:

  1. Writing a meta description that is not relevant to the information presented on the webpage.
  2. Recording the same meta description across all the web pages of the website.
  3. Recording the meta description with only keywords.

URL Structure:
It’s important to create a URL structure that is friendly to the search engines as this will help in better indexing of your website. For this reason, it is essential to create appropriate filenames and expressive categories on your website. One must avoid the following:

  1. Recording long URLs
  2. Recording the same URL across all the web pages.
  3. Recording deep nested subdirectories
  4. Recording irrelevant directory names.

Website Navigation:
A website that is easy to navigate can help the visitors to find the information they are looking for. It also helps the search engines in indexing the pages appropriately. It is important to ensure that all the web pages of your website are interlinked properly and also show the correct page when clicked on. The use of sitemaps both HTML and XML help the spiders to crawl the website easily and also index it. One must avoid the following:

  1. Creating complex websites that are difficult to navigate.
  2. Creating drop-down menus.
  3. Developing a HTML sitemap in which the pages are not organized.
  4. Indexing the 404 page in the search engine.

Unique Content:
The content that is hosted on your webpage needs to be informative, such that it can elicit action. Ensure that the content is not copied and is 100% your own creativity. Keep the content focused around your primary keywords and ensure that the keyword density is around 2.75% to 3.21%. It is also good to keep changing the content on your website so that the visitors can see that the site is not static but dynamic with its content. One must avoid the following:

  1. Using images that serve as textual content.
  2. Using long sentences.
  3. Incorrect grammar and spelling mistakes.
  4. Duplicate content on the web pages of your website.
  5. Stuffing keywords unnecessarily.

Anchor Text:
Anchor texts are links that direct visitors to the internal pages of the website or to an external page/website. Anchor text helps the users to easily navigate between pages and also helps the spiders to understand what the page is all about, that it is linked to. One must avoid the following:

  1. Using general anchor texts.
  2. Using anchor text that is not related to the content of the webpage or is off topic.
  3. Using long sentences.
  4. Creating unnecessary links.

Heading Tags:
Heading tags are used to represent the heading of the content of the webpage. Heading tags range in 6 sizes – h1, h2, h3, h4, h5 and h6. These tags should only be used at the appropriate places. One must avoid the following:

  1. Using one heading tag for the entire content of the webpage.
  2. Using too many heading tags throughout the content of the webpage.

Alt Tag Optimization:
Images can’t be read by a spider when they crawl on the website. Therefore, it is important to use alt tags for the images. It is best suggested to use the primary keyword as the alt tag following the contents that describe the page. One must avoid the following:

  1. Using long filenames.
  2. Stuffing excess of keywords in the alt tags.

Robots.txt File:
A robots.txt file is used to prohibit the robots to crawl a particular page based on the nature and content of information that is available. This file must be placed in the root directory of your site and also named as robots.txt. One must avoid the following:

  1. Search result pages to be crawled.

Website Promotion:
You can promote your website using offline promotion, online promotion, social media sites, AdWords optimization, Google’s Local Business Center, forming groups, forums etc.

Once you have implemented or taken note of all these tactics, do use the Google Webmaster Tools that will help you in solving many of the issues that are related to your website. You can also monitor the performance of your website by using Google Analytics.

Ten(10) Easy Steps to Detoxify Your Body

Ten(10) Easy Steps to Detoxify Your Body

The environment we live in is full of toxins. We inhale them in the air we breathe, ingest them with our food and water, and absorb them through the pores in our skin. Even the personal care products and cleaning supplies that we take for granted are full of poisons that are harmful to our bodies.

While we are surrounded by pollutants from the environment, the human body produces its own toxins. Our metabolic processes result in chemical wastes which can compromise our health.

The accumulation of these harmful substances in the body is known as “toxic load” – sometimes referred to as “body burden.” Over time, the buildup of environmental toxins in our systems can lead to chronic or severe health problems.

Some medical researchers estimate that nearly 75% of the diseases that afflict us are largely due to the toxicity of our systems. Headaches, chronic respiratory illness, cancer, and even autism have been linked to the accumulation of unsafe chemicals in the body.

The good news is that, although it is impossible to completely isolate ourselves from these harmful substances, we can reduce our exposure to them and decrease their impact through a simple detoxification program. By following these 10 easy steps, you will rid your body of many harmful chemicals, putting yourself on the path to a healthful lifestyle and greater sense of well-being.

1. Get plenty of restorative sleep. Adequate rest is critical to your body’s ability to heal itself and perform its many biological functions properly.

2. Plan your meals with good nutrition in mind. Be sure to eat plenty of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables; avoid processed and pre-packaged foods, refined flour and sugar products, trans-fats, and red meats. Proper nutritional balance is important for maintaining healthy organ function, especially the excretion of toxic elements through the liver.

* A cleansing diet designed to flush toxic matter from your digestive system may be incorporated into your detox program. Keep in mind that these diets are meant for the short term only, and people who are being treated for a medical condition should not undertake a restrictive diet without the approval of their physician.

3. Adapt a stress management technique that suits your lifestyle, such as yoga, meditation, or another soothing activity that you enjoy. Stress is responsible for the production of hormones which can be harmful, leading to heart disease and other severe illness; stress management reduces levels of these hormones and boosts your ability to cope with the challenges of life.

4. Physical activity heightens your body’s ability to excrete toxins, as well as providing an overall health benefit. Exercise is important to the success of your detoxification efforts, in addition to being necessary for a healthy lifestyle.

5. Avoid behaviors that are detrimental to your health, like smoking, drinking alcohol in excess, and recreational drug use; stay away from artificial stimulants like caffeine. These substances will inevitably slow down your detoxification progress.

6. Take herbal supplements. There are several detoxifying herbs which are available in either tea or capsule form. These include dandelion, milk thistle, burdock, and red clover. Ginger root and the popular acai berry are also known for their detoxifying properties, as is Vitamin C.

7. Purchase a body cleanse or liver and colon cleanse kit. These consist of natural detox products that flush toxins from your liver and colon, restoring optimal function.

8. Drink plenty of water. Adequate hydration is needed to remove toxic elements from your body.

9. Massage therapy is not only relaxing and restorative; it allows your body to excrete toxins up to 200 times faster than on its own.

10. Take a sauna or a hot bath regularly. The skin is a major excretory organ, and the heat of a sauna or bath opens the pores and increases your body’s rate of natural detoxification.

11. Reduce exposure to toxic elements. An air filter in your home will drastically improve the quality of the air you breathe; use natural cleaners and personal care products whenever possible to prevent the absorption of toxins through your skin. Sticking to organic foods lowers your risk of ingesting dangerous pesticides.  Watch out for foods wrapped in plastic wrap; plastic contains chemicals called phthalates which are known to cause cancer and developmental problems, including early-onset puberty.

While it is impossible to completely eliminate your exposure to dangerous chemicals in the environment, by following these steps you can greatly diminish their harmful impact on your health.

Acai Berry And Its Health Benefits

Acai Berry And Its Health Benefits: Fact & Fiction   by Paul Crane in Health    (submitted 2010-05-25)

Unless you’ve been trapped on a desert island the last year or two, you’ve probably heard of Acai, the newest “superfruit on the block.” While “superfruits” are nothing new, and several have made brief appearances on the market recently (noni, goji, mangosteen, etc) none have “caught fire” like Acai. We can thank Oprah – who recently featured Acai on her show – and the mainstream media for this.  So what exactly is Acai? And what sort of benefits can one expect from supplementing with it?

The acai berry is the fruit of the palm tree with the same name and is native to central and south America, where it normally grows in the rainforest. Acai is a rich source of anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds responsible for the dark purple color of the fruit.

Anthocyanins are believed to have significant benefits; preliminary clinical studies performed on animals show anthocyanins to have anti-aging and anti-cancer characteristics (Menopause. 2009 Mar-Apr;16(2):345-9, Nutr Cancer. 2006;54(1):84-93) as well as protective effects against cardiovascular disease (J Appl Physiol 100: 1164-1170, 2006).

One of the things that has made Acai so popular with those who perpetuate the superfruit craze is its very high ORAC score. ORAC, or oxygen radical absorbance capacity, is a score used to rate the antioxidant power of different foods.

While it’s difficult to determine a credible ORAC score for this fruit, there’s no argument that it is very potent in this regard. In fact, a recent study (J Agric Food Chem. 2008 Sep 10;56(17):7796-802. Epub 2008 Aug 12) validates both acai pulp and juice’s ability to increase concentrations of anthocyanins and plasma antioxidant capacity in human volunteers.

Beyond their antioxidant content, acai berries are rich in monounsaturated fat, similar to olive oil. As part of a healthful diet pattern, these “healthy fats” may also help reduce cardiovascular risk (JAMA. 2005;294:2455-2464.) The berries also provide a range of nutrients, including vitamins B, C and E, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, fiber and phytosterols.  So does Acai merit its status as a “superfruit”? Maybe. But the hype is running well ahead of the reality.

For example, anthocyanins are not unique to Acai. You can find them readily available in much cheaper fruits like blueberries and red grapes. In fact, a recent study (J Agric Food Chem. 2008 Feb 27;56(4):1415-22. Epub 2008 Jan 26.) ranked Acai below pomegranate juice, red wine, concord grape juice, blueberry juice and black cherry juice.

Despite this, Acai’s exotic image and celebrity status has led to an escalation of wildly ridiculous claims that have no basis in fact. This is especially true of products sold on the Internet.

For instance, you’ll find it sold as a weight loss panacea, a “detoxing and cleansing” solution, and a “cure all” for just about everything. Of course, there is absolutely no evidence Acai helps with weight loss, “detoxes the body”, or provides any benefits short of those discussed above.

To make matters worse, many of these products are sold through negative option billing scams. In essence, you sign up for a free trial of a product and are added to a recurring billing program you didn’t endorse and cannot cancel. This, not surprisingly, has captured the attention of law enforcement.

Conneticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal had this to say…
“There are no magical berries from the Brazilian rain forest that cure obesity, only painfully real credit card charges and empty weight loss promises.”  And more recently, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has been warning consumers to avoid signing up for free trials of acai-based weight loss products, echoing the comments of Mr. Blumenthal.

CSPI senior nutritionist David Schardt, author of the “acai scam” expose (published in the April ’10 issue of CSPI’s Nutrition Action Healthletter) summed it up this way… “If Bernard Madoff were in the food business, he’d be offering ‘free’ trials of acai-based weight-loss products…”

Additionally, several expensive acai-based juice products are being hawked via various MLM and pyramid schemes. Consumers need to be mindful that every enthusistic endorser is often also a promoter, and stands to benefit financially from any sales s/he makes.

Consequently, such recommendations need to be viewed with a hearty dose of skepticism. So what’s the bottom line on “this miracle from the rainforest?”

There’s no doubt it’s a super antioxidant, and rich in various nutrients. But it’s not a cure-all. Even in Brazil, where fresh acai is eaten daily, it’s not regarded as a cure for cancer or other degenerative diseases. It’s just… fruit.

Nutritious, but not miraculous. And not necessarily superior to less exotic, cheaper, more readily available options.

Mulberries
Red Mulberries
Red MulberryThe ripe fruit of this common tree is very dark purple, nearly black,
although unripe fruits are reddish.
There are two common mulberry tree species, the native red mulberry (Morus rubra), and the Asian white mulberry (Morus alba). The red mulberry, which reaches a height of about sixty-five feet, with rough, reddish-brown bark.
The aggregate fruit, composed of lots of berries stuck together, each with its own seed, is long-oval in shape, and hangs from a short, slender fruit stalk

The white mulberry only grows up to forty feet tall, with rough, lighter, ochre-gray bark and spreading branches. Mulberry bark has distinctive vertical cracks or furrows, with an occasional orange-brown streak between the cracks. Both species have roughly oval, toothed, alternate leaves 2-6″ long. Sometimes theyíre variably lobed, sometimes theyíre unlobed. The red mulberryís leaves feel like sandpaper underneath. The white mulberryís leaves are smooth underneath. As the new leaves develop in mid-spring, tiny male and female flowers hang on separate small, slender, inconspicuous spikes. The male cluster is longer, the female rounder.
Pink Mulberry
Pink MulberryThis fruit is also sticky-moist when ripe.
They grow throughout the country, ripening in late spring and early summer. You can spot ripe mulberries in season from a distance because the fruits make such a mess on the ground. You can do anything with mulberries you do with virtually any other berry, and they dry and freeze well. Lemon or lime juice enhances their flavor, since they donít have the acidity of other fruits. Dried mulberries are more crunchy, like (related) figs. You can grind them in a the blender, and mix in nut butter, sweetened to taste, to make a mulberry candy.

You can also use the young, unopened leaves in the spring. Boil them for twenty minutes and discard the water, for mild, tasty vegetable. This water, the unripe berries, uncooked young leaves, and mature leaves are toxic and mildly hallucinogenic. While they wonít kill you, theyíll give you a terrific headache and an upset stomach. The primary hallucination is that youíre so sick, youíre going to die. However, youíll probably eventually recover.
Raspberry
Black Raspberry
Raspberries contain significant amounts of polyphenol antioxidants such as anthocyanin pigments linked to potential health protection against several human diseases. The aggregate fruit structure contributes to its nutritional value, as it increases the proportion of dietary fiber, placing it among plant foods with the highest fiber contents known, up to 20% fiber per total weight. Raspberries are a rich source of vitamin C, with 30 mg per serving of 1 cup (about 50% daily value), manganese (about 60% daily value) and dietary fiber (30% daily value). Contents of B vitamins 1-3, folic acid, magnesium, copper and iron are considerable in raspberries.
Raspberries rank near the top of all fruits for antioxidant strength, particularly due to their dense contents of ellagic acid (from ellagotannins), quercetin, gallic acid, anthocyanins, cyanidins, pelargonidins, catechins, kaempferol and salicylic acid. Yellow raspberries and others with pale-colored fruits are lower in anthocyanins. Due to their rich contents of antioxidant vitamin C and the polyphenols mentioned above, raspberries have an ORAC value (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) of about 4900 per 100 grams, including them among the top-ranked ORAC fruits. Cranberries and wild blueberries have around 9000 ORAC units and apples average 2800.The following anti-disease properties have been isolated in experimental models. Although there are no clinical studies to date proving these effects in humans, preliminary medical research shows likely benefit of regularly consuming raspberries against: inflammation, pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, allergies, age-related cognitive decline, degeneration of eyesight with aging

Korean Raspberry
Black Raspberry (Bokboonja) is a high quality traditional wine from a prestigious Bokbunja brewery in Korea. It is made of carefully chosen raspberry with ocean breeze in yellow soil zone.
Bokbunja wine is one of the best great-tasting cordial for today’s most popular traditional wine in Korea. It has dark purplish color but clear with unique and exquisite taste. Dark berry, pine tree, floral aroma and honey flavor.
* Medicinal Effects of Bokbunja

Medicinal Effects : Bokbunja can be used to help men who have impotency, premature ejaculation, urinary problems and hyperactivity. Women may also get some effects on promoting healthy skin, vision and to protect heart and liver. It has been known as a stimulant for the sex drive.
