What is Ginseng Saponin (Ginsenoside)? Ginseng, the root of Panaxginseng C.A. Meyer, is a medicinal plant used worldwide and has been reported to have various biological effect. Ginseng saponins are the main pharmacoactive molecules of ginseng. They exhibit efficacy as anticancer, antistress, antihypertention, and antidiabetesagents, and facilitate learning and improve weakness as tonics. More than 34 ginsenosides, triterpene-derivatives containing sugars, have been isolated from ginseng. Based on their structure, the ginseng saponins can be classified into three groups: the protopanaxadiol-type; the protopanaxatrio-type; and loeanolic acid-type saponins. Effects of Korean Ginseng : Brain-function stimulating ingredient : Professor Oh, Jin-Seob
in Seoul National University have reported that Korean ginseng facilitates brain function and maintains emotional stability by selectively controlling both excitement and calming moods. The research findings indicate that ginseng has effects on delaying deterioration of brain function and improving brain activities.
- Treatment and prevention of adult diseases : Prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus : Ginsenosides with triol compounds of White Ginseng have somewhat positive impact on the onset of type I diabetes
mellitus and reduces incidence rate of type I diabetes mellitus. - Treatment and prevention for cancer : Because Korean ginseng improves immune function of cancer patients and their body resistance ability, it inhibits the growth and metastasis of cancer cells. Administration of white ginseng extracts containing large amount of
saponins to patients with gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer, and breast cancer for 3-6 months was effective on inhibiting the progression and growth of cancer cells in 69.7% of the patients. - Control of blood pressure : Although white
ginseng contains both Rg group, a component increasing blood pressure, and Rb and Rc groups, components decreasing blood pressure, it normalizes blood pressure in general. - Treatment
of artherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia : White ginsenosides stimulate enzyme activities related to lipid metabolism such as fat and blood cholesterol, and prevents the formation of atheroma caused by hyperlipidemia in aortic tissues. It also improves hyperlipidemia, a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, by stimulating cholesterol turn over. - Health recovering functions of Korean ginseng : Maintaining homeostasis of the physical function Breakman, a pharmacologist, addressed that white ginseng has mild pharmaceutical activity. It particularly affects the control mechanism of the body, resulting in adaptation activities to maintain homeostasis of the body. - Enhancement of sexual function : In the treatment for impotence, EDRF is involved in the dilation of corpus carvenosum muscle, the key controller of erection, which is known as nitric oxid. Ginseng is involved with EDRF in vascular smooth muscle cells, stimulating the secretion and dilation of EDRF, and increases EDRF and NO of endothelial cells that control the dilation of corpus
carvenosum smooth muscle, directly affecting the erection and improving the erecting function. - Protection and treatment for the liver Professor Sakakibara has reported that ginsenosides of Korean ginseng stimulate cholesterol synthesis and
decomposition metabolism function in the liver. White ginseng stimulates protein compound and glucose fat metabolism, and activates detoxification function of the body. - Prevention
and treatment of gastro-intestinal impairment : The efficacy of Korean ginseng on gastrointestinal impairment was tested by administering extracts of Korean ginseng to male rats with various types of gastric ulcer. - Effect on alcoholic detoxification : It was reported that the activities of various enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism were increased by ginsenosides. Through microscopic findings, he observed that the liver cells of rats receiving combination of alcohol and ginseng
for 10 consecutive days were less impaired than those of rats receiving only alcohol - Effect on recovery from fatigue : In several experiments, anti-fatigue effect of ginseng was tested on white rats being
forced to exercise using vibration. Ginsenoside Rg1, a triol compound, showed particular anti-fatigue effect. Testing of anti-fatigue effect of main ginsenosides of Korean ginseng including Rob, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Rf, and Rg1 in white rats showed all these types of ginsenosides had anti-fatigue effects. - Anti-aging effect : Abdominal injection of ingredients of Korean ginseng and evaluation of enzyme activities showed that ginsenosides inhibited the formation of lipid and decomposed the lipids already formed. - Effect on blood circulation : Dr. Petrov administered Korean ginseng to 30 adults (the average age of 45 years), including both genders, who had various diseases such as artherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, hypotension, and hepatopathy, and found that it improved a variety of subjective symptoms such as headache, dull headedness, abdominal distension, cold extremities, lack of appetite, dizziness, musculoskeletal pain, and fatigue, without manifestation of any adverse events. - Enhancement of immune function : Regarding pharmaceutical efficacy of Korean ginseng, Breakman, a pharmacologist, refereed the strengthening effects of Korean ginseng as °non-specific resistance-enhancing phenomenon, suggesting that Korean ginseng non-specifically enhances immune
capability by increasing the resistance toward harmful environments in the body. This effect of Korean ginseng was called as ¡®adaptation effect. - Treatment and prevention effects on anemia : Professor Yamamoora administered ginseng to 30 patients with aplastic anemia in a collaborative research, and found that the ginseng was effective only on 3 patients but 14 out of 38 patients with liver disease, gastrointestinal disease, diabetes mellitus, and pulmonary tuberculosis were recovered.
